There was no other thought at my command
Than haste in gladness waiting for my smile.
I dreamt of stone arising from the sand,
And chisels stung the face of Egypt’s hills!
The darker race groaned out, and whips uncoiled,
As all my thoughts took shape in granite rills
Above the sinuous adder of the Nile.
Long time I marveled from my couch of gold
To see my obelisk encroach the sky
And carve my epitaph that all behold:
“Then Japheth bent his back to build My mind;
Ra’s favored Son I was, in life. I was-“
Cold fear entombed my heart, as all at once
I heard a Voice from Sinai say: “I AM.”
